Syracuse Women Show Their Passion For Voting

DANYELL MONK: Today, Le Moyne College student Julia Petersen voted for the very first time. She says that even though she was nervous to vote, poll workers at the Eastwood Community Center were helpful.

JULIA PETERSEN: I was a little nervous but they made sure I knew what I was doing and they were all very sweet and helpful so I liked it.

MONK: A main reason she’s voting is because of the women of the past who made voting a possibility for her today.

PETERSEN: I’m a woman and since I feel like the right to vote had to be fought for by so many women before me it would kind of be an injustice to them if I didn’t come out and vote today.

MONK: Others in Eastwood showed that they feel the same way. Just across the street from the Eastwood Community Center polling place are signs encouraging young people to vote and reminders to the overturning of Roe versus Wade. Disabled voter Clara Fore says the overruling is why women should vote.

CLARA FORE: They’re talking about their body and it’s their choice to make a choice. Nobody can make that choice for them.

MONK: Despite a steady flow of voters throughout the day, Petersen still worries about her generation. She says people should remember how powerful their vote can be.

PETERSEN: For first time voters, don’t be afraid. I feel like a lot of people my age, like I’m 19, don’t wanna come out and vote because they just think it’s not important but every vote counts and it’s important to get your opinion out there.

MONK: Poll workers here at the Eastwood Community Center polling site say there’s been a consistent flow of voters throughout the day and it’s kept them very busy. In Eastwood, Danyell Monk, Democracy in Action.

EASTWOOD N.Y. (DiA) — Today women voters in Syracuse spoke about their passion to vote. At the Eastwood Community Center Le Moyne College student Julia Petersen voted for the very first time. She said that she was a little nervous about voting but the poll workers on site were helpful.

“I was a little nervous,” said Petersen. “But they made sure I knew what I was doing and they were all very sweet and helpful so I liked it.”

Petersen felt the urge to vote because of the women of the past who made voting a possibility for the women of today. She said that she feels like it would be a injustice to those women if she didn’t vote.

Disabled voter Clara Fore was another woman at the polls today. She said that she was there to vote for a variety of reasons.

“I believe in the right thing,” said Fore. “I believe in taking care of the seniors. I believe in that it’s a woman’s choice to guard her body. I believe in our social security rights. I believe in what the Democrats are saying.”

At the Eastwood Community Center there was a steady flow of voters throughout the day. Poll workers said that they were excited to be as busy as they were. They said there was never really a lull of voters coming through the doors. Despite the good turnout, Petersen still worried about her generation coming to the polls.

“For first time voters, don’t be afraid,” said Petersen. “I feel like a lot of people my age, like I’m 19, don’t wanna come out and vote because they just think it’s not important but every vote counts and it’s important to get your opinion out there.”
