Voters Urge Minorities and Younger People to Vote

Voters in Syracuse went to Magnarelli Community Center to vote on Election Day

JACOB HALPERIN: Only a few decades ago not everyone had the right to vote in this country. People from minority groups fought so everyone can vote. James Connors stresses the importance of honoring the past generations who couldn’t vote by going out to cast a ballot.

JAMES CONNORS: Young men of color your grandmother couldn’t vote, but minorities couldn’t vote either and if you are a minority and you’re not voting there’s a lot of people that died for that and a lot of people that fought for that.

HALPERIN: Connors and his wife Samantha along with many others went to the Magnarelli Community Center to vote, but very few were young voters. Another voter stresses the importance of younger people voting and says he made sure every single member of his family votes today.

EDWARD HAIBT: It’s very important. I’ve been begging my whole family to come out and vote and they are coming out later tonight every one of them is from eighteen and up.

HALPERIN: With still plenty of time to head to the polls, the polling manager is pleased with the turn out so far and wants every American to contribute to the democracy before the end of the day.

TOM BURGESS: An important election after President I think governor is the second most important certainly for people of the state and I think that it is proving to be important to the people due to the turnout.

HALPERIN: Over 200 ballots have already been cast here Armond Magnarelli Community Center and the poll manager is optimistic that this will lead to very high end of day number. And a message from the voters if you are eighteen years or older, please vote. Reporting from Syracuse, I’m Jacob Halperin NCC News.

 

Syracuse, N.Y. (DIA) – Only a few decades ago, women and people of color did not have the right to vote in this country. People during this time fought hard, so now everyone in our country has the right to vote. An African American voter wasn’t pleased with the recent turnout from people of color and wants it to improve.

“Young men of color your grandmother couldn’t vote, but minorities couldn’t vote either and if you are a minority and you’re not voting there’s a lot of people that died for that and a lot of people that fought for that,” said James Connors.

Connors joined his wife Samantha on Tuesday to go vote at the Magnarelli Community Center in Syracuse, New York to do something that his grandfather could not do, which was vote. Conners along with other voters also stressed the importance of the younger generation voting and another voter is making sure that all his family members vote to prevent this theme from continuing.

“It’s very important. I’ve been begging my whole family to come out and vote and they are coming out later tonight every one of them is from eighteen and up,” said voter Edward Haibt.

The polls at Magnarelli Community Center were busy, but it was clear that the representation from the older generations was much larger than representation from the younger ones. Despite this, the polling manager was very pleased with the early morning turnout and also urged all Americans to take part in democracy as he said it’s a privilege that everyone should exercise.

“This is an important election after President I think governor is the second most important certainly for people of the state and I think that it is proving to be important to the people due to the turnout,” said polling manager Tom Burgess.

Over 200 Ballots had been cast at this site early in the morning and the polling manager was optimistic that this was a great sign for high overall polling numbers by the end of the day and he also noted that early voting participation was great this year.
