Voters Look Toward the Local Community in the 2022 Election

(Rivo) Election Day is an important day as it gives citizens the chance to vote to make their voices heard. At the gym for St. Lucy’s Parish Center on 425 Gifford Street, representing your local community has been the overarching theme among voters.

Sterling Boston, originally a native of Arkansas who came to vote by bike filled out his sample ballot with the mentality of looking for a candidate who will makes things run smoothly. 

(Boston) “Having a good attitude and using their head to make things work.

(Rivo) Shari Merten who just moved to Onondaga County back in June, also found that supporting her newfound local community as a perfect reason to vote.

(Merten) “I think it’s important to vote in every election as it effects the community directly. So that is why I came out to vote.”

(Rivo) Another voter, June Kimber, spent this election day working phone lines to spread awareness of voting. Kimber brought her daughter to go vote with her, something her father used it do with her. 

(Kimber) “I was raised that the importance of voting mattered. My dad used to bring me to the voting polls when I was younger and I started to bring my daughter.”

(Rivo) While national elections often get more press, it’s important to remember the impact elections have on your community as voting is a freedom not everyone has. For Democracy in Action, I’m Samuel Rivo.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (DIA) –  Election Day holds importance in the United States as it gives citizens the chance to vote to make their voices heard. While election days usually draws viewers to watch to see who wins major positions like in Congress and governorships, the citizens who voted at St. Lucy’s Parish Center on 425 Gifford Street in Syracuse, cared more about how the local elections will effect their community. 

Sterling Boston, originally a native of Arkansas, took time out of his day to bike to the voting site. Boston was looking for a candidate that will represent his needs, a promise he felt that wasn’t kept by past candidates. Having proper representation for him is someone who will keep a good mindset and work hard to make things run smoothly.

Another voter, June Kimber, spent this election day working phone lines to spread awareness of voting. Kimber brought her daughter to go vote with her, something her father used it do with her. Kimber hopes this family tradition would inspire others to have the same passion for voting as her father did for her. Another resident, Shari Merten, who just moved to Onondaga County back in June, also found that supporting her newfound local community as a perfect reason to vote. 

Even though national elections often get more press, it’s important to remember the impact every race has on your community as voting is a freedom not everyone has.
