SARAL KHARE: Today Our Lady of Pompei held their 73rd annual spaghetti supper for election day and there was a lot of preparation that came into making food for this occasion.

Technology Teacher Colleen Rosenthal says the cooks had to prepare gallons of food before election day for the supper.

COLLEEN ROSENTHAL: We’ve been working for a really long time getting ready for the day. Last Saturday we rolled about 6,000 meatballs, we have about 700 pounds of pasta, 200 gallons of sauce and it’s all scratch made ready to go for everybody.

KHARE: Even though a lot of food has to be prepared volunteer Joe Losurdo says it’s still a fun experience.

JOE LOSURDO: We all enjoy being together working together it is a lot of work we enjoy the cooking but sometimes the quantity and the amount of work is a little overwhelming it’s a lot of hard back breaking work

KHARE: Development Director Lucy Paris says that politicians come every year for the supper

LUCY PARIS: Historically this is the place to be at noon on election day, all the politicians were here every race you can imagine were here breaking bread together

KHARE: Losurdo says that their lunch crowd wasn’t as crowded today since they opened up in-person since Covid.

LOSURDO: We had a crowd today but not as much as our normal lunch crowd is hopefully it’ll pick up more in the evening but we did do a lot of takeout’s in the afternoon.

Syracuse, N.Y. (DIA)–  Today Our Lady of Pompei held their 73rd annual spaghetti supper for Election Day and there was a lot of preparation that came into making the food. Technology teacher Colleen Rosenthal said the cooks had to prepare gallons of food.

“We’ve been working for a really long time getting ready for the day,” said Rosenthal. “Last Saturday we rolled about 6,000 meatballs, we have about 700 pounds of pasta, 200 gallons of sauce and it’s all scratch made and ready to go for everybody.”

Volunteer Joe Losurdo has been volunteering at Our Lady of Pompei for 30 years. Even though there was a lot of food to prepare, Losurdo still had an enjoyable experience preparing the food.

“We all enjoy being together working together,” said Losurdo. “It is a lot of work we enjoy the cooking but sometimes the quantity and the amount of work is a little overwhelming it’s a lot of hard back breaking work.”

This is the first time in a few years that the supper has been held in person because of COVID. Losurdo said the supper is adjusting back to normalcy.

“We had a crowd today but not as much as our normal lunch crowd is,” said Losurdo. “Hopefully it’ll pick up more in the evening, but we did do a lot of takeout’s this afternoon.”

In addition, the annual supper is a tradition for local politicians. Our Lady of Pompei Development Director Lucy Paris said that politicians come together.

“At noon historically this is the place to be at noon on election day,” said Paris. “All the politicians were here every race you can imagine were here breaking bread together.”
