For Voters in Dewitt, the Right to vote is all About the Family

Audio

For some families, their right to vote is about more than just themselves. Some parents believe voting is a big influence on their children.

Ben: While someone’s vote impacts what’s going on now, it can also help build the future of the United States. At least that’s what Elisha Hllean (Helen) said. Hllean, who voted at the Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church in Dewitt this morning with her children, says her vote affects far more than just the present.

Elisha: It’s important for these guys, it’s important for their future. It’s important because my choices and my decision impact what goes on in their lives

Ben: Some parents, such as Leah Goldberg, who also voted in Dewitt this morning, said it’s important to get kids to the polls because their school is experiencing its own form of democracy.

Leah: They’re voting at school this morning for their student council, so I think it starts early.

Ben: For the Goldbergs, participating in democracy is truly a family affair.

DEWITT, N.Y. (DIA) – Election day is an important time for many Americans. It’s a part of what makes the United States’ democratic system great. Citizens from all across the country get to vote on issues that matter the most to them.

There are a wide ranging number of issues impacting this election, including inflation, a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion, and environmental issues. But for some families, this election is important for a different reason: the children.

Elisha Hllean, who voted at the Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church in Dewitt this morning, said her vote is essential for protecting the future of her kids.

“It’s important for these guys, it’s important for their future, she said. It’s important because my choices and my decision impact what goes on in their lives.”

Hllean said she wants to see a future where things are more fair for American citizens, where not one group has all the power in the country.

Leah Goldberg, another parent who voted at the Church in Dewitt this morning, said her kids’ school is holding its student council elections at their school this morning. Since the school is experiencing its own form of democracy, getting her children to the polls enhances their knowledge of what they’ve already been exposed to.

“They’re voting at school this morning for their student council, so I think it starts early,” she said.

For many families such as the Goldbergs, taking part in democracy is a true family affair.

All polls throughout the state of New York close tonight at 9 P.M.

The polls are open at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church in Dewitt until 9 P.M. (c) 2022 Ben Deitrick
