Voters and Poll Site Manager at Huntington Hall discuss the importance of voting in the midterms.

This is Lindsay Arons with Democracy In Action and I visited the polling site at Huntington Hall at Syracuse University to speak to voters.

First I spoke to Poll Site Manager Raj Dewan who discussed his role in Election Day today.

RAJ: “Our main purpose is to verify that they are a voter and help them in the voting process. We are here from 5AM, the polls open at 6, to get everything ready. The polls close at 9 but we don’t go home till 10. The reason we are here is to really help our citizens to exercise their right to vote and to do a little bit for the country and our democracy.”

I asked 21 year old voter Evan Wilson if he was passionate about any candidates on the ballot

EVAN: “I wouldn’t say I’m too passionate about any of them, but you know, civic duty. I’m not a fan of Zeldin’s sort of stuff on Trump, so I just voted for Hochul.”

66 year old Chris Maros says that while he doesn’t know the candidates well, it’s still important to vote

CHRIS: “I’m not as informed as I should be, when the presidential election ones come up I usually have a lot more information. Half these people I’ve never heard of before. I didn’t always vote in the past, but I think it’s important to vote.”

20 year old Kaden Warner has only voted once before in the 2020 presidential election. He emphasizes the importance of voting in the midterms.

KADEN: “This is the first midterm election I’ve voted in, I feel like a lot of people in this country tend to only vote in presidential elections. I think the main election for the president to be effective is the midterm election.”

The polls will continue to stay open until 9pm tonight. From Huntington Hall in Syracuse, I’m Lindsay Arons, NCC News

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (DIA) – The excitement of Election Day is being felt on Syracuse University’s campus as one of Onondaga County’s polling sites is right here on campus. Huntington Hall hosts the polls this year and many voters and those working the polls discussed their different experiences.

Our main purpose is to verify that they are a voter and help them in the voting process,” says Poll Site Manager Raj Dewan. “We are here from 5AM, the polls open at 6, to get everything ready. The polls close at 9 but we don’t go home till 10. The reason we are here is to really help our citizens to exercise their right to vote and to do a little bit for the country and our democracy.”

Voters expressed the importance of exercising their right to vote. Evan Wilson, 21, voted despite not feeling passionately about any of the candidates. “I wouldn’t say I’m too passionate about any of them, but you know, civic duty” said Wilson. “I’m not a fan of Zeldin’s sort of stuff on Trump, so I just voted for Hochul.”

66-year-old Chris Maros says “I’m not as informed as I should be, when the presidential election ones come up I usually have a lot more information. Half these people I’ve never heard of before. I didn’t always vote in the past, but I think it’s important to vote.”

Kaden Warner, 20, had only voted once before in the 2020 presidential election. “This is the first midterm election I’ve voted in, I feel like a lot of people in this country tend to only vote in presidential elections,” Warner said. “I think the main election for the president to be effective is the midterm election.”

The polls for the 2022 midterm elections will remain open until 9 p.m. tonight.
