Huntington Hall: Change in venue creates confusion amongst voters

Syracuse, N.Y. (Democracy in Action) – As Troy Gates entered Huntington Hall at Marshall Street to cast his ballot there was a small issue with his address which he had to sort out.

“Probably there was some problem with my transition when I was moving from my earlier dormitory,” Gates said.

Gates, a second time voter, is a Syracuse University student. Earlier he was staying in Southern Hall inside the SU campus but last year moved to Washington Arms, another dormitory for students.

Richard Kusnierczyk, who came to cast his vote with his partner Eric Humber – with whom he has been in a live-in relationship for the last 42 years – informed the low turn out and the confusion surrounding casting one’s ballot might have been because of a change in venue.

Kusnierczyk and his partner Humber have always cast their ballots in Bird Library off Waverly Avenue.

Kusnierczyk, a self proclaimed anti- Republican said, “If the democrats actually run the donkey I would rather vote for the donkey than voting for a Republican candidate,” he said.

While Kusnierczyk is very vocal about his disillusionment with the Republican Party, Humber is of the opinion, like his every vote counts even though the polling has been low in Huntington Hall.

Kristen Phipps, one of the poll watchers who was in duty, informed that Huntington Hall had previously been the venue for the Sept. 12 Primary Election.

“The lease for Bird Library ran out so for the Mayoral Election polling is happening here,” she said.

Currently, 1867 voters are registered to cast their ballots in Huntington Hall.

But while a few voters knew which candidates they would be voting for; for Brian David Sanchez , it bowed down policy making.

With none of the candidates for the Mayoral Election having held an office before, Sanchez took time to attend a few campaigns himself.

“I attended a couple campaigns by Juanita Perez Williams and Ben Walsh but I like Williams campaigns and some of her policies so I voted for the Democrat candidate,” Sanchez said.
