SKANEATELES, N.Y. (Democracy in Action) — One Skaneateles teenager voted Tuesday, Nov. 8, for the first time.

“I’m really excited that I get to have my values represented in the government,” Dana Leahy said.

Even at 18 years old, Leahy said she understands the importance of every vote.

“I think it’s really important for people to vote.  They should take advantage of a democratic process that not all countries have.  It’s a privilege we’re lucky to have in America,” Leahy said.

Leahy was one of the young first-time voters that used Facebook for information about polling locations and ballots.

“Facebook made it easy.  You can look up your polling station and things on your local ballot, and I used that feature,” Leahy said.

Facebook usually connects Leahy with friends and family, but today, it has connected her to information to ensure her vote counts, Leahy said.
